Mostly regarded as a group hug commander card, Howling Mine has seen its time in the competitive sun more than once. Mark Justice made top 8 at the very first Pro Tour in 1996 by combining Icy Manipulator with artifacts that turned off when tapped - specifically Howling Mine and Winter Orb to keep himself drawing cards while his opponents couldn't untap their lands. 

Ten years later Tiago Chan and future hall of famer Antoine Ruel both made top 8 at Pro Tour Honolulu with their Owling Mine deck that used Howling Mine, Kami of the Crescent Moon and Boomerang effects. While both players had their hands full, Ebony Owl Netsuke and Sudden Impact closed the game out. Mirror matches were interesting to say the least.
