Zak Elsik took Grand Prix Oklahoma by surprise in 2015 by winning it with a deck that would control its opponents draws using Lantern of Insight to know when to use Codex Shredder and Ghoulcaller's Bell. The deck was a grind to the finish line with the only win conditions often being a single Pyrite Spellbomb that you would recur with Academy Ruins or simply milling the opponent out one card at a time.

The deck would have continued success including an 8-2 record at Pro Tour: Oath of the Gatewatch, the best performance of any Modern deck at Pro Tour: Rivals of Ixalan and five more Grand Prix top 8's including another win at Grand Prix Brisbane in 2017; it's entirely possible the deck would have had an even stronger showing but was limited due to its complexity - you can't win an event drawing every match after all.

Lantern Control has faded into obscurity in Modern, but is still a worthy candidate for grindiest deck in the format's history
