Ensnaring Bridge has been locking out creature decks for 25 years but perhaps never as egregiously as it did in the Modern Lantern Control deck. Zak Elsik took Grand Prix Oklahoma by surprise in 2015 by winning it with a deck that would control its opponents draws using Lantern of Insight to know when to use Codex Shredder and Ghoulcaller's Bell. The deck was a grind to the finish line with the only win conditions often being a single Pyrite Spellbomb that you would recur with Academy Ruins or simply milling the opponent out one card at a time.

The deck would have continued success including an 8-2 record at Pro Tour: Oath of the Gatewatch, the best performance of any Modern deck at Pro Tour: Rivals of Ixalan and five more Grand Prix top 8's including another win at Grand Prix Brisbane in 2017; it's entirely possible the deck would have had an even stronger showing but was limited due to its complexity - you can't win an event drawing every match after all.

Lantern Control has faded into obscurity in Modern, but is still a worthy candidate for grindiest deck in the format's history
